WHAT IS SELF DEFENSE?

Self defense is so much more than learning a martial art, or handling a taser, or shooting a gun. It requires you to sharpen your intuitive skills and learn to assess your situation every time you step away from your front door.

You must learn to avoid any situation that is a potential threat. The first requirement of a good self defense program is to go on the offense and be proactive. The first stage of an effective self defense program is awareness.

Awareness means being aware of your surroundings, being able to recognize potential threats, and potentially dangerous situations.

I observe people all the time, especially if they are in close proximity, watching for abnormal behavior. I am not saying you have to act paranoid every time you leave your home, but you do need to pay close attention to your surroundings.

One thing I have noticed in my observations of people is that most are preoccupied in some way. They seem to be walking around oblivious to what is going on around them.

Some will be totally absorbed walking around with their headphones on listening to whatever and just about everyone these days it seems has a smart phone and this makes preoccupation and unawareness worse.

It is entirely possible that martial arts were created from self defense. Many years ago in the Feudal days of Japan, all weapons were confiscated in the islands and the farmers had no way to protected themselves against robbers and bandits.

The farmers of this period took matters into their own hands and created weapons from simple farming tools. As an example, that is how the Nunchaku was invented. They were simply two sticks used to beat rice and later joined together with a rope or chain creating a weapon.
