A TRUE STORY

Seriously, unless you are exceptionally skilled in the fighting arts, or you are well trained like a Navy Seal, it is also best to get away from danger.

What if you’re accosted and you can’t turn around? You have no choice but to try and defend yourself.

If you can remain calm enough, you could instantly go on the offense, and attack your attacker.

That something that doesn’t happen very often, but I love it when I hear a story where it does happen.

Several years ago when I studied with Grandmaster Rho, my Hapkido sensei, one of his students, a high ranking black belt, was at a convenience store getting gas, and some would be attacker tried to high jack his car with a knife. The black belt took the knife away, subdued, and restrained him until the police arrived.

So, in the face of danger, if you can remain calm and cool enough, you may be able to catch your attacker off guard, so the first weapon you have in your arsenal is the element of surprise. Basically it’s the last thing your attacker would expect.

You will certainly add chaos to his game plan and possibly confuse him to the point where he may think that he chose the wrong victim. It’s not an easy thing to do, I get it, you will probably be fearful, but you don’t want to show it.

Remaining calm in the face of danger can be a difficult skill to master and having the self confidence to react in this way can greatly enhance the self defense skills you are learning.

That is another great benefit of learning a martial art. It can help build your confidence levels making you more secure in your ability to protect yourself or a loved one.
